Introduction: Build Your Own Deck Bench with Storage! Tired of cluttered decks and lack of seating? This DIY deck bench combines comfortable seating with ample storage to maximize your outdoor space. Follow these easy steps to create a functional and stylish addition to your backyard!
Materials You'll Need:
  • Pressure-treated lumber (dimensions and quantities specified in cutting list below)
  • Exterior wood screws (various sizes, see step-by-step)
  • Exterior wood glue
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Wood stain or paint and sealant (exterior grade)
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Circular saw or miter saw
  • Drill with drill bits and screw driving bits
  • Clamps
  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection
Cutting List (Example Adjust to Your Desired Bench Size): Note: All lumber should be pressure-treated. This is just an example, adjust to your desired bench dimensions
  • Bench Seat Supports (2): 2" x 4" x (desired bench length 7")
  • Bench Legs (4): 4" x 4" x 17"
  • Front/Back Aprons (2): 1" x 6" x (desired bench length)
  • Side Aprons (2): 1" x 6" x (desired bench depth 2")
  • Bench Seat Slats (Desired amount to cover top): 1" x 4" x (desired bench depth)
  • Box Frame Sides (2): 1" x 6" x (desired bench length)
  • Box Frame Front/Back (2): 1" x 6" x (desired bench depth 2")
  • Box Frame Bottom (Plywood recommended): (desired bench length -2") x (desired bench depth 2")
  • Lid Supports (2): 1" x 2" x (desired bench length 2")
  • Lid (Plywood recommended): (desired bench length) x (desired bench depth)
Step 1: Build the Bench Frame First, create the frame that will support the bench. Attach the Front/Back Aprons and the Side Aprons together using wood glue and exterior screws. Ensure the corners are square. The side aprons will fit inside the front and back aprons.
Step 2: Attach the Legs Position the 4"x4" legs inside each corner of the frame you just built. Use wood glue and screws to secure the legs firmly to the aprons. Make sure each leg sits flush to the bottom edge of the aprons.
Step 3: Add the Bench Seat Supports Attach the 2"x4" bench seat supports along the inside of the front and back aprons, positioned to provide support for the bench seat slats. Use wood glue and screws. These supports create a level surface for the slats. Be sure the seat supports are about 2" below the top of the aprons so that the seat slats will sit flush with the top edge.
Step 4: Install the Bench Seat Slats Space the 1"x4" bench seat slats evenly across the frame. Attach each slat to the seat supports using wood screws. Maintain consistent spacing between the slats for a clean, uniform look.
Step 5: Construct the Storage Box Build the storage box that will sit underneath the bench seat. Attach the Box Frame Sides and Box Frame Front/Back pieces to form a rectangular box. Use wood glue and screws. The bottom should fit inside these boards.
Step 6: Install the Box Bottom Secure the plywood bottom to the frame of the storage box, ensuring it is flush with the edges. Use wood glue and screws for a strong and stable base.
Step 7: Attach the Storage Box to the Bench Frame Position the completed storage box underneath the bench frame and attach it using screws. Make sure it is centered and securely fastened. Screw upwards from the legs and box frame into the bench frame.
Step 8: Create the Lid The plywood lid will sit on top of the box frame.
Step 9: Add Lid Supports Attach the 1"x2" lid supports to the underside of the lid. These will prevent the lid from sliding around.
Step 10: Attach the Lid Attach the lid to the bench using hinges. This will allow you to lift the lid and access the storage compartment.
Step 11: Sand and Finish Sand all surfaces of the bench to smooth out any rough edges. Apply wood stain or paint to protect the wood and enhance its appearance. Apply a sealant to protect against weather damage.
Conclusion: Enjoy Your New Deck Bench! Congratulations! You've successfully built a deck bench with storage. This project provides extra seating and valuable storage space, all while adding a custom touch to your outdoor living area. Enjoy relaxing on your new bench!
